Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith, 39 (incomplete)

Former Playboy Playmate and reality television star Anna Nicole Smith, 39, died yesterday at a South Florida hospital after collapsing in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, due to “combined drug overdose” said Dr. Joshua Perper, medical examiner for Broward County, Fla.
Smith danced topless at a strip club back home in Texas before making the cover of Playboy in 1992. She later signed a modeling contract for Guess jeans appearing in magazines, commercials and billboards before her reality television show in 2002 "The Anna Nicole Show" while also being spokeswoman for Trimspa weight loss supplement.
Smith had been legally married twice in her life, the first to the father of her late son Daniel Wayne Smith, who died about a year prior whom she left all assets in a 2001 will. The second marriage was to the late millionaire oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, 90, whose estate she'd been battling for since his death one year after their marriage.
Smiths most recent boyfriend-lawyer, Howard K. Stern, is convicted and found guilty of conspiring to get Smith sedatives and painkillers under false names, alongside her psychiatrist Dr. Khristine Eroshevich.

Panhandling Ordinance: Act of heartlessness or a smart business move?

Due to downtown businessmen insisting something be done, Mayor Datolli announced today that she will be introducing a new panhandling ordinance to the city council. Seemingly the primary reason for wanting immediate action is the businessmen find the vagrants bad for business and they create a seedy image for the downtown area. The ordinance calls for the establishment of a program to offer homeless people one-way bus tickets to a town where they have family. Downtown businessmen have promised to raise all the money needed for bus tickets.
Businessmen say they approach the passerby for money and business leaders don’t approve of them being in front of their stores scaring away good customers. The vagrants eat, urinate, and sleep in parks, parking lots, doorsteps, unlocked vehicles and elsewhere. Some people are in disagreement with the ordinance like Sandra Gandolf who believes the ordinance to be heartless, since many of the homeless have long-lasting problems including mental illness and/or drug or alcohol addiction and need real help. She proposes that instead, the city should provide programs to feed and house the homeless, guiding them toward mental health treatment, substance abuse counseling, and job assistance.
In opposition to citizens like Gandolf the mayor announced today that the city’s police currently charge vagrants with minor crimes such as indecent exposure and shoplifting. Datolli says the vagrants clog the jails and the court systems while eventually ending up back on the streets. Introduction of the new ordinance is scheduled to take place at the councils approaching Tuesday night meeting at 8pm.

Recollections of 9-11, Ten Years Later

Ten years ago on September 11th 2001, Ashllie Jenkins, a fifth grader at Bates academy in Detroit, was exposed to an event that would only become clear in meaning years later.  After several students were picked up by their parents, Jenkins remembers hearing from her elementary school teachers, the basics concerning the tragic event. No details or close to home connections, besides a fellow classmate whose father was employed in D.C and came to pick the child up from school that day, would occur which made this tragedy even more distant and non-relatable for Jenkins at the time.  Due to Jenkins mom being a school teacher at another school she was not dismissed early like her classmates had been.  Returning home with her mother they watched coverage of the event on several news stations.
When asked what stood out the most about that day Jenkins stated how “localized” the event was for her. This day was an Election Day for the city of Detroit and she remembered being upset that people wouldn’t get out their votes because the city was in such a stir from the news of the attacks. She asked herself, “Why would they do this on our Election Day?” Reflecting on this day Ashllie Jenkins, currently a sophomore attending Michigan State University says, “I didn’t understand the magnitude of the situation because of me being such a young age.” After seeing the story being reported every day for about a year after it occurred, she finally realized the importance of this day. ” I didn’t get that it would be a defining moment in history.” After interviewing Jenkins it seemed as if her youthful age and unawareness of similar acts of terrorism worked against her generation of children and their understanding of the importance of 9-11.
